Only a few with auto. Mostly in aperture priority with single point focus as you suggested. I didn't set the size so maybe it was too small. The tree was waving in the breeze as well.

were you in Auto mode ? (and what does it decide for focus point(s)?).
Single point focus in either aperture or shutter priority would be the way to go. I am guessing you can set the size of the single focus point too (you can on the D7500).
