St Athanasius 'contra mundum'
"Saint Athanasius lived in the fourth century during the time of what used to be considered the greatest crisis of faith ever to befall the Catholic Church, the Arian Heresy. (The Arians denied the Divinity of Our Lord Jesus Christ). The vast majority of Churchmen fell into this heresy, so much so that Saint Jerome wrote of the period, "The whole world groaned and was amazed to find itself Arian"."
Today we might say: "The whole Church groaned and was amazed to find itself Bergoglian Protestant" One might go even further to ask whether "it is amazed to find itself non-christian"
I am guessing it is either:
- a representation of 'the world' (fallen humanity)
- a representation of heresy
- the devil
- Arius himself.
I suspect the last one.

I would like to say he is crushing a Jesuit, however that order had not been founded during St Athanasius' life time.
