I went to mass last weekend at St Thomas More's of Toowoomba. Fortuitously, the Feast Day of St Thomas More was only a few days earlier, so he received many mentions. As a patron saint of lawyers, and as one who stood for a holy church and against the fashion of the times, I wonder if my dear friend Paul feels like him at times.
The modern statue shown on the left is not large - perhaps a metre tall - but also made of wood - perhaps another fashion of the times. Unfortunately the priest who said mass was a visitor, and the congregation hung around chatting with him, so I could not find out more about the statue of the history of the parish church nor the artist.
It was clearly a school hall rather than a church (forgive the amateurish image stitching), that brought back memories of mass at Aranda - the last school hall mass I recall. I wonder if Paul and I used to hang around chatting after one of those. For that, it was very well attended, and the priest spoke well on both the saint and the recent encyclical.
Yes, I do relate to St Thomas More. I know what the axe symbolises, but when I see the axe lots of things of an unchristian nature come to mind that I'd like to do with it.
