This week I have noticed another interesting ship as I cross Anzac bridge into the city.
The ship is the Shirase, a Japanese Self Defence Force icebreaker. The Shirase is 12,650-tons and is one of the world's most powerful icebreakers. However, it recently had a bad run. The Shirase became stranded in the Antarctic Ocean on Feb. 16, being the first Japanese Antarctic research vessel to run aground since Japanese research voyages to the South Pole started about 60 years ago.
I am particularly impressed by the colour, which matches this website, and the dining room, which would serve as a wonderful wargaming room. I wonder whether the Japanese Navy would allow a few extra passengers for a long Antarctic boys 'weekend'?
nice one - nice wargame room.
were they assisting the scientific research in the Southern Ocean?
